APeX Center Construction Update: Over 10,000 Square Feet of Concrete Poured

At 3:00 AM, while most of St. Petersburg was still asleep, the job site at the APeX Center came to life.

Crews arrived before sunrise, lights came on, concrete trucks started rolling in, and the early morning pour began. This was a major milestone for the project as more than 10,000 square feet of concrete was poured throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

From the ground, it was a full team effort. From the air, the progress was even more impressive. The latest aerial drone shots, captured by Aeronautical Productions, show the scale, coordination, and nonstop movement that went into a concrete pour of this size.

A Major Step Forward for the APeX Center

Concrete slab day is one of the most exciting phases of a ground-up construction project. It is the point where all the preparation underground begins turning into something you can really see and feel.

Before the first truck arrived, the site had already gone through a long process of grading, forming, layout, inspections, utility coordination, reinforcement, and preparation. Every detail matters before concrete is placed because once the pour starts, the entire operation has to move with precision.

For the APeX Center, the team worked through the early morning hours and continued into the afternoon, placing concrete across a large section of the building footprint. With over 10,000 square feet being poured, coordination was key from start to finish. A large concrete boom pump truck was also brought on-site to help move the concrete efficiently across the project area, allowing the crew to place material exactly where it was needed while keeping the pour moving at a steady pace.

How the Concrete Pouring Process Works

A successful concrete pour starts long before the concrete truck gets to the job site.

First, the area is carefully prepared and checked to make sure the surface is ready. Forms are set to hold the concrete in place, reinforcement is installed to help support the slab, and the crew reviews the plan so everyone knows where the concrete needs to go and how the pour will flow.

Once the concrete arrives, the placement process begins. Crews guide the concrete into position, spreading it evenly across the prepared area. As the concrete is placed, workers use tools to level it, remove high and low spots, and make sure the slab is being poured to the proper grade.

On a pour this large, timing is everything. The concrete must keep moving, the trucks need to stay on schedule, and the team has to work efficiently before the material begins to set.

Concrete Finishing: Where Skill Really Shows

After the concrete is poured and leveled, the finishing process begins.

Concrete finishing is what transforms freshly poured concrete into a smooth, durable, and properly finished slab. Crews use specialized tools to refine the surface, smooth out imperfections, and create the correct finish for the space.

This stage takes patience, experience, and timing. If finishing starts too early, the surface can be damaged. If it starts too late, the concrete can become too firm to work properly. The crew has to read the concrete as it sets and move at the right pace throughout the day.

For the APeX Center, once the pour was complete, finishing work continued as the slab began to take shape. It was a long day, but every step brought the project closer to the next phase of construction.
